Ever since, for almost two hundred years now, women have been dominating the world of science-fiction novels, while also dabbling in a variety of sub-genres like fantasy, action, adventure, humour etc. Here’s a list of the women who have most impacted science-fiction.

1. Mary Shelley
   Written: Frankenstein
   Mary Shelley was only eighteen years old when she wrote Frankenstein, which is considered to be the first sci-fi book written. She basically invented the genre.
2. Ursula K. Le Guin
   Written: Earthsea Series, Hainish Cycle Series, Lavinia
   Ursula K. Le Guin has won several awards for her work in fantasy and science fiction, and has been awarded the title of Grandmaster in these genres. She writes for adults and children.
3. Octavia Butler
   Written: Kindred, Wild Seed, Parable of the Sower
   Also a recipient of many awards, Octavia Butler has written sci-fin while also weaving in important elemental themes of race, sex, gender and class.
4. Nnedi Okorafor
   Written: Binti, Who Fears Death
   Nnedi Okorafor is Nigerian-American, and writes sci-fi, fantasy and speculative fiction for children. Her works are magical and tantalising.
5. Lauren Beukes
   Written: Moxyland, The Shining Girls
   Breaking all gender stereotypes, Lauren Beukes has written books about the edges of sci-fi, from time-travel to serial killings to urban fantasy and literary fiction. You’ll never get bored of her works.
